Fuel Additives

Last month I went to my favorite gas station here in southern Ontario and found all 3 grades of gasoline had been labeled with “May Contain up to 10% Ethanol”. I used to be able to get pure gasoline in the Premium grade at this station. That made me a bit sad as I pumped fuel into my vehicle. I later read that at the start of the year the government had mandated ethanol in all grades of fuel.

Most modern vehicles can handle that ethanol content and the fuel gets used up fast enough – I always seem to be filling my tank these days – that it doesn’t go stale or deteriorate too quickly. That may change for me though in the near future – stay tuned to more info about that!

Where ethanol really causes problems is in classic cars that don’t get daily driven and small engines which were never designed for alcohol content. Both categories often see more time in storage than use and suffer from stale fuel and incompatible materials.

AMSOIL Upgrades Saber Professional 2-Stroke Premix Oil Formula

AMSOIL has upgraded the formula of Saber Professional 2-Cycle Premix Oil for 2014. The biggest perceptible change other than the packaging label update is the addition of a gasoline stabilizer component to the premix oil. We also note from the specification numbers that they have tweaked the formula throughout.

I have been using Saber Pro in my 2-stroke string trimmer for several years and can confidently attest that the previous formula was excellent. The fuel stabilizer addition is a solid move that makes this product a complete package.

The biggest selling feature of Saber Pro is something that is not new. With this synthetic premix comes the ability to use a single fuel/oil ratio for all the two-stroke implements you own. Saber Pro mixed at anywhere from 75:1 to 100:1 will IMPROVE the performance and wear protection of engines requiring mix ratios of 20:1 through 100:1. This has been true since AMSOIL first released a synthetic premix oil in the mid-1970′s making this tried and true technology.

The Perfect Spring Package

The snow has all melted away and we’re starting to get a bit of cabin fever here in Southern Ontario. Our lawn equipment gets an oil change in the fall so all there is to do is to put some quickshot in the gas can and fill up the tanks.

Here are two products that go hand in hand. One makes the grass grow thick and strong while the other protects your outdoor power equipment for another year.

The AGGRAND Hose-End Sprayer kit (G1102) is an easy way to spray the quart sized bottle onto your lawn and garden. A quart sized bottle should give you 2 to 3 feedings for an averaged sized lawn.

Fueling Up

I filled up the tanks with fresh fuel today. Just need to put the blade back on the Ariens mower and everything is ready to go for the spring season.

A dose of Quickshot SE goes into both tanks to stabilize the fuel and keep ethanol in suspension.

The 44ml pillow packet of AMSOIL Saber™ Synthetic 100:1 Pre-Mix 2-Cycle Oil is the perfect size for my string trimmer. I use it with 4L of fuel which is roughly a 90:1 ratio which lasts me all summer in that tiny engine.

Ariens Leaking Fuel

The second time I went to mow the lawn with our Ariens mower it had a hard time starting and sputtered to a stop shortly after starting. When I opened the fuel tank to take a look it was empty. That was unexpected since I filled it a week earlier and barely use any fuel to cut my lawn.

So I got a carburetor rebuild kit and two feet of fuel hose from Cliffs to rebuild the carb and replace the fuel line. There was a few rough spots in the fuel line when I inspected it – a nick or two near the finned combustion chamber. I did notice the oil level seemed to be creeping up slowly. I had a feeling the oil was being contaminated with fuel so that had to be changed.

This was a great time to put in some AMSOIL 10W-30/SAE 30 Synthetic Small Engine Oil.
